Sit and Be Fit is a non-profit organization that produces America's award-winning television exercise series, known by the same name. The program is carefully researched and designed by host Mary Ann Wilson, RN, along with a team of physical therapists, doctors, and exercise specialists. Broadcast on PBS stations since 1987, Sit and Be Fit reaches over 86 million U.S. households annually and is recognized by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) as a "Best Practice" program in health promotion and aging.
Mary Ann Wilson, a registered nurse in the field of geriatrics and post-polio rehabilitation, is the founder and host of the award-winning Sit and Be Fit exercise show. The program is broadcast on over 100 PBS television stations across the United States.
Sit and Be Fit has received high praise from medical professionals. Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, described the program as "practical, effective, and inspiring," adding that it "repeatedly makes the point that our bodies are our most precious possession." Similarly, John A. Fagan, M.D., a Geriatric Specialist at Rockwood Clinic in Spokane, Washington, strongly endorsed the Sit and Be Fit videos, stating that they "have brought the importance of exercise to the geriatric and less mobile population with significant benefit."
Sit and Be Fit has also touched the lives of viewers, like Mauilea P., who shared her personal experience with the program. After struggling with a debilitating neck and shoulder injury for three years, Mauilea found that just a month and a half of doing the Sit and Be Fit exercises helped her regain almost her full range of motion in her right arm. She also noticed that her body had become stronger, more flexible, and her posture had improved, while the small but annoying aches and pains had virtually disappeared.
Another viewer, Mrs. Dorothy P., discovered the Sit and Be Fit show two years ago and praised the host's demeanor, hair, and cheerful smile, as well as the exercises that were "just right" for her. She appreciated the host's constant admonitions to go only to one's own range of motion, so viewers don't feel bad if they can't go as high as the host. Mrs. Dorothy P. expressed her love for the show, stating that it is helping her stay healthy and mobile, and that she tells all her friends about it. She recognized Sit and Be Fit as a wonderful public service for older and retired people who can't get out much, and wished the host continued success, saying, "May God bless you. Keep up the good work."
